Flora – ArtLove Project Day 13

Why do we give flowers on Valentine’s Day? I originally thought this was just another marketing ploy like others surrounding this holiday (i.e. diamonds are forever is by far the greatest marketing strategy ever employed). It turns out that it was actually an ancient custom that has been taken as tradition. Flowers all have specific meanings & lovers could communicate feelings with one another through a bouquet.
Wikipedia has a fairly large list of flower meanings here.
The above photo is an origami paper lily that I folded (directions found here). The original plan was to make paper roses — but I couldn’t find any detailed directions with super clear diagrams and it turns out they are quite difficult to make. I thought if I could make paper cranes, that I’d be able to knock out a few roses with no problem. This was not the case. :-)

How Sweet It Is – Day 12

How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You – Hit song from Marvin Gaye. Some of his songs end up tagged in cheeseball romantic commercials & scenes in movies, but his music is influential & far reaching & has been covered and sampled by a lengthy list of musicians.
The above photo is of a glossy black laser cut & engraved acrylic charm I had made. It’s relatively small – less than 2 inches wide.

Limbo – ArtLove Project Day 11

Wing it. 3.5 x 5.5inches. Mixed Media on Gray Cardstock
LIMBO – Uncertainty. A transitional state. The waiting game. (Just for reference, I’m talking about the literal meaning) Being in limbo literally means not knowing the outcome of something. Waiting for something to occur.
I think in terms of relationships, a little bit of (short term) limbo is a good thing. It’s excitement, or maybe tension. People crave that to a certain degree, I think.
It’s that moment of flight or fight. Leap & have faith that the net shall appear. All great things come at great risk. Fortune favors the brave. Better to have loved and lost, than to have never loved at all.

Connections – ArtLove Day 10

Sometimes it’s a form of love just to talk to somebody that you have nothing in common with and still be fascinated by their presence. ~David Byrne
I really like the idea that people have a whole greyscale of love emotionality to be shared with the world. A heart is not a finite resource to be hoarded & kept secret. It is best reused often & shared with many.
The above photo collage is a collection of recycled junk mail paper heart cutouts laid out on black textured construction paper. Tweaked a wee bit in photoshop.
This is day 10! You can more about the artlove project here.
